document design a document - whether it's an article in a trade publication, a training manual, or an online help product -  is much more than just its content.

the form of a document - its design, or layout - can enhance or detract the reader's understanding.

form cannot be separated from content.  just as the words convey meaning in a document, so too does the visual organization.

technical communicators are trained to use software tools in the design of the work they produce. this training also allows a technical communicator to discuss design principles with other professionals who might do the design work instead.

**except for the PlotMaker online help product, all of the portfolio pieces that appear on this site, as well as the website itself, were designed by me.

i used PageMaker, PhotoShop, Adobe Acrobat, MS Paint, MS FrontPage, and MS Word.

business card for ovarian connection

in consultation with Louise, i designed the wordmark and this business card for ovarian connection.

the wordmark appears throughout all the documents for this organization.

pagemaker was the software i used.

newsletter for ovarian connection

this is an eight-page newsletter designed for ovarian connection. it was important to have design continuity within all the documents produced for this organization.

click on the graphic to view the newsletter in acrobat reader.
if you want to print it, please note that you will have to use 11x17 paper.

postcard for ovarian connection

the purpose of this postcard is to reach potential workshop participants and to distribute the premier issue of the newsletter.

this is the front - consistent with other ovarian connection documents.

this is the back with the call to action.

in a perfect world, the postcard would be postage-paid.

my business card

this spiral is an ancient celtic symbol.
no copyright issues with the ancients.

i thought it made a friendlier symbol of "twiss" than a tornado might.

invitation to our portfolio show

we each had to design an invitation to our portfolio show.

i tried to visually represent the idea that writers do not work in isolation.  the hands represent co-operation and commitment.
